Have you seen those articles and photos of the 80-year-old body builder? The 90-year-old sky-diver? The great-Gramma who is still Latin dancing with her grandson?

Then there’s the career figure skater, the gymnast and the swimmers… who are still practicing their craft well into their 80s.

Aren’t they amazing? Wouldn’t some small part of you love to have their strength, their fortitude, their genetics?

I do agree that they are strong, resilient and genetically gifted…but they are also outliers.

Really.

For those of you who might be new to the term “outlier” it goes like this:

“a person or thing situated away or detached from the main body or system.

a person or thing differing from all other members of a particular group or set.”  *

Basically, they are not the norm.

Most people in their 60s and 70s have slowed down somewhat. Most people in their 80s cannot pole dance or set world records in the pool. Most Grammas and Great-Grammas would love to hit the dance floor with their strong young grandsons but the first hip bump would land them on the floor, and laughing through the pain!

That is the norm!

Are you the norm or an outlier?

If you are an outlier, Congratulations! And keep posting those videos so those of us who are the norm can appreciate your fitness and gumption, and experience a few twinges of “could I?”

If you are the norm, Welcome to my world! Won’t you come on in?

Do your best to maintain strength and flexibility and good health as you age, but don’t sweat it if you aren’t an outlier!
